The Consoler-in-Chief

Missing the point entirely, yet again:
"The president believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed," [White House Spokesperson Dana] Perino said … . "Certainly, bringing a gun into a school domitory and shooting ... is against the law and something someone should be held accountable for."

PS: Re: the title of this post: Someone on CNN actually said this, apparently unironically. Just when I think I've mastered my gag reflex ...

that Perino is one sharp cookie. maybe we need to get her working on negotiating the Middle East Peace Plan, fixing global warming, or solving the looming Social Security crisis. you know, something with a higher degree of difficulty than spoon-feeding mindless propaganda to Fox News.

(there is precedent for this: remember when "The West Wing" finally, irrevocably jumped the shark by promoting C.J. (perhaps the most annoying characters in the history of prime time drama) from press secretary to chief of staff? a position formerly held by none other than Leo McGarry, the quintessential, be-all-end-all apotheosis of The Man Behind The Man.)

Maybe she thought "President Not in Favor of School Shootings" would be a great headline?

It's definitely a bold stance on enforcement of the law. That kind of deft legal maneuvering clearly warrants her a spot on the Supreme Court (something there is also precedent for, Miers-I'm-looking-at-you).

He's working on his "guns don't kill people, bullets do!" speech. CNN will run "Wiki-President: Bush Helping Us All Understand the Obvious."
